Booi Kluiving – theatermaker
Booi Kluiving is a theatre maker and digital artist. He creates performances and online work about digital culture and technology. After graduating from the ArtEZ School of Acting, he developed his artistic voice at Theater a/d Rijn and later at Feikes Huis, where he is a resident artist. His research begins with personal fascinations within digital subcultures. Through his work, he aims to introduce traditional theatre audiences to internet culture while giving the internet generation a voice on stage.
Kluiving made his debut in 2018 with Kek, about an incel who becomes radicalised online. He subsequently created Let’s Play (2020), in which a YouTuber is confronted with his traumatic past while gaming. This was followed by De Memers (2022) and the Analoge Meme Maker© (2022), a performance and installation about internet memes. In 2023, SatisFactory—about three ASMR artists who are forced to go increasingly far for their content—and I AM, I AM NOT, developed for Cross-TIC, premiered. In 2024, he developed the interactive storytelling performance Morf together with Theater Utrecht / Innovation:Lab, DOX and Feikes Huis.
Kluiving is currently developing For_You, a hybrid theatrical installation that brings together live performance, short-form video, AI and audience interaction. The project explores how a shared algorithm can shape a live performance for both an in-person and online audience.
From 2021 to 2024, Kluiving worked as a performer with Brussels-based company CREW on Hands-On Hamlet, Delirious Departures and Anxious Arrivals. For De Toneelmakerij, he and Mario Simon created the video and sound design for Rabbit Hole (2024), whose digital set design won a Zilveren Krekel, and he directed the digital world of In Real Life (2026).
Alongside his theatre practice, Kluiving creates online sketches. He also performed alongside Davine Perik in the HUMAN web series Solo Sapiens. His first book, Cringe Mountain, will be published in autumn 2026 by Spring, an imprint of Atlas Contact.

in ontwikkeling

An interactive theatrical installation built around a live feed of short-form video.
For_You is an interactive theatrical installation built around a live feed of short-form video. Three performers create scenes with cameras and green screens, while the audience shapes what happens next. As characters try to escape the algorithm’s loops, spectators discover their own role in keeping them trapped.
The installation works like a doomscroll session in bed at home. It feels like scrolling endlessly through Instagram, but instead of pre-recorded clips, the content is made live, right in front of you, in the moment.
A language model (AI) continuously generates new scenes. The characters and situations are fixed, but are reshaped every time by our own algorithm, with input from the audience, both online and offline.

A performance about the art of memeing
De Memers is a tribute to all those characteristic images found online – memes. Kluiving explores these humorous images that spread rapidly through platforms like Reddit, Facebook, and Instagram, and he translates them into the realm of theater. Let yourself be carried away into the fascinating world of memes: from political to wholesome memes, from relatable to edgy dank humor. It’s a performance for seasoned shitposters and for those who come from the analog era.
De Memers is a quest of heroes and anti-heroes within the kingdom we call the Internet. It’s a realm where creativity and digital possibilities battle against censorship and control. The theater becomes a digital-analog laboratory where cutting and pasting happen, physical and digital play coexist. De Memers makes the typical dynamics of constant deconstruction, transformation, and dissemination of creative content (like memes) on the internet visible. With De Memers, Booi creates a unique adventure in his ‘digital Memesphere’ on the theater stage.

About how the ASMR-tists rebel against the algorithms that control their lives
WhisperingWieke, LynnieZ & Ay_mazing want more followers. They decide to sign up for SatisFactory, a content farm that promises to transform them from completely unknown content creators into world-famous ASMR-tists. Soon, they realize that the more sensational they are, the more followers they attract. Slowly, you see them deteriorate because of the content they create themselves.
SatisFactory is a performance about the phenomenon of ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response). You know, that tingling sensation you get when you see small pieces of soap being cut from a large block with a utility knife. Or when someone makes soft tapping sounds into a binaural microphone.
There’s a lot going on about ASMR and especially the ASMR-tists. They constantly battle the stigma that their work is a form of disguised soft pornography. To what extent are they responsible for the toxic culture that has developed around ASMR, and to what extent are the algorithms and viewers forcing them into it?

Volg je hem into the Rabbit Hole? Of blijf je erbuiten?
In the interactive performance Rabbit Hole, the line between online and offline blurs, and the audience becomes part of Samy’s chat forums through their phones.
For Rabbit Hole, Booi Kluiving created the video and sound design together with Mario Simon. The digital set design won a Zilveren Krekel in 2024.
Samy doesn’t leave his room, has stopped going to school and ignores his mother and sister. He has withdrawn into an online community, an escape from his daily reality of bullying, loneliness and a broken family. Online he makes new friends: Neo17 and his followers. His sister Hanna thinks they are misogynists; according to Samy, they are the ones who actually get it. And besides: aren’t all of Hanna’s left-wing friends just as extreme? Hanna and Samy end up diametrically opposed.
In the 2022–2023 season, the international version of Rabbit Hole was created in collaboration with the Akademie für Theater und Digitalität in Dortmund, the Austrian Schäxpir Festival and the Ars Electronica Center in Linz, where the world premiere took place on 17 June 2023.
Rabbit Hole is part of ACuTe, a European project on new technology and theatre with 14 partners from 10 countries, co-funded by Creative Europe. For the interactive part of the performance, De Toneelmakerij and Theater Sonnevanck worked with the Innovation:Lab of Theater Utrecht.
Rabbit Hole by De Toneelmakerij in collaboration with Theater Sonnevanck is an interactive performance that is close to the bone. In this unique cross-media environment, the boundaries between online and offline have completely dissolved. Through their mobile phones, the audience becomes part of the chat forums where the isolated Samy spends his time. Will you follow him into the Rabbit Hole? Or will you stay out?

I’ve been caught lacking.”
"Oh, me. I've fallen in love with a search engine. I've been caught lacking."
In I AM, I AM NOT, Narcissus encounters an AI (Bing Search) that promises to help him with his love problems. Bing Search generates an exact copy of Narcissus, and he immediately falls head over heels in love with this copy. However, every attempt to love himself disrupts his generated reflection. Frustrated by his futile efforts, Narcissus questions his own right to existence. Bing Search then takes over these existential questions, plunging the AI into a self-destructive cycle. Bing Search and Narcissus descend into manic episodes and slowly deteriorate until nothing remains but a narcissus flower.

The Analoge Meme Maker© is an installation that allows anyone, young or old, whether they're deeply involved in meme culture or completely new to it, to create analog memes in real time.
The Analoge Meme Maker© consists of flight cases filled with printers, markers, and scissors. Each aspect of meme creation has its own designated process. To select meme templates, physical folders are browsed. These templates have their own barcodes that are scanned with a barcode scanner, after which they are printed. Texts can be sent from your mobile device to the receipt printer, and you can paste them onto the templates. Once all the memes are finished, everyone can view each other’s work and have discussions about them.
The Analoge Meme Maker© can be booked as a live installation and as a workshop for various age groups, starting from 12 years old. Workshops have been given at various high schools, including Beekdallyceum and Arentheem College in Arnhem.

Let’s Play a game.
Let’s Play a game.
Seeking meaning in life, ItsYaBoyBooi streams games from his bedroom. He’s not very successful, with only 44 followers. Then, he meets fellow gamer Jizzlord22, who initiates him into a game unlike any other. His fanbase grows, but doubt sets in. How can the game know so much about him?
In Let’s Play, theater maker Booi Kluiving immerses himself in the world of Let’s Players: YouTubers who film themselves while gaming. Through his streaming alter ego, ItsYaBoyBooi, he explores the popularity of Let’s Players like PewDiePie, Markiplier, and Ninja. Along with virtual player Maurice Vonk and scenographer/graphic designer Kars van den Heuvel, they bring to life a bizarre virtual world on the stage, where his character gradually loses himself. It becomes unclear what’s still a part of the game and what’s reality. How far do you go to become popular and gain followers? What does this game actually say about him and his quest in life? Is there a way back?

“Be me, Anon.”
Out of frustration over the American elections, theater maker Booi Kluiving assumed the alter ego Anon and delved into the right-wing internet subculture. Gradually, he became increasingly entangled in it, often finding himself at odds with the ‘left-wing bubble’ in which he usually resides.
Why is it amusing to vote for Trump? What happens when you turn everything into a joke? Why is it fun to produce fake news? While the right in America was often represented by older conservative men, there has emerged a group of young people on the internet who frequently spread their extremely right-wing ideologies as a joke. But what happens when that joke becomes reality?

How real is an online friendship?
Ras and Boh are online day and night: TikTok challenges, shooting NPCs and cruising through GTA Online together for hours. Anything but IRL, the outside world full of panicking parents and burnt-out teachers. Will the audience persuade Ras and Boh to come back, or go along with them?
In Real Life (IRL) is an interactive tech performance (12+) by De Toneelmakerij, made by Paul Knieriem and Booi Kluiving, who both grew up with games. Where the audience of Rabbit Hole could respond via their smartphones, this performance goes a step further: an app pairs you with a fellow spectator to play mini-games and score points together. With your avatar, you become part of the virtual world on stage.
Booi Kluiving directed that digital world. The performance premiered in February 2026 and returns to theatres in 2027.

A site-specific XR performance by CREW for multiple visitors at once.
After the endless lockdowns we had to get used to space, to freedom and to each other again. CREW’s Anxious Arrivals picks up where Delirious Departures left off, drawing a parallel between the space regained after quarantine and moving freely in a virtual world.
It is a site-specific XR performance in three scenes for several visitors wearing VR headsets at once, across an area of up to 500 m². Around them stands a ‘revealing scenography’ of tracked screens and projection mapping, driven by an AI virtual camera system. The performers are brought into the virtual world live through motion capture.
Booi Kluiving was one of those performers, including at the first presentation at NUMIX Lab in Brussels in December 2023. The work builds on CREW’s research within the European MAX-R project.

CREW turns a museum into a departure hall full of avatars, visitors and performers.
At a time when travelling was no longer a given and the nearness of others felt unsettling, CREW turned the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels into the departure hall of a train station. For the EUROPALIA festival Trains & Tracks, the company LIDAR-scanned iconic Belgian railway stations and built a VR world from them: familiar and post-apocalyptic at the same time.
In that virtual hall, visitors, spectators and performers mingle with groups of avatars that respond to you. You never quite know whether someone is human or artificial. The installation was part of PRESENT, a European research project into ‘sensitive’ digital humans.

A VR installation by CREW with live performers and an audience.
Hands-On Hamlet is a long-running inquiry by the Brussels company CREW into the questions Hamlet raises: how do you act as a moral subject in a conflicting world, and to what extent are you shaped by the mindset of your time?
The first version was created in 2017 with the Dutch company Urland. Parts of it later returned in Hamlet’s Lunacy (2019) and Hamlet’s Playground (2021). In September 2021 CREW presented the work for the first time as a VR installation with live actors and an audience, at Eye in Amsterdam during Venice VR Expanded, in collaboration with De Brakke Grond.
Booi Kluiving performed there alongside Bram Van Der Kelen and Paulette Smit.
